"Ancient gateways leading to secret courtyards, Romania's baroque, Gothic, and Sessionist cities are delight to explore"

Situated almost 300km northwest of Bucharest, Sibiu is a beautiful 12th Century Saxon town nestled in the Transylvania countryside. Despite the best efforts of the Romanians to build a rather unattractive new town, the old town of Sibiu is the real jewel in the crown. The winding cobbled streets, brightly coloured houses and decorative bridges between buildings all lend themselves to create a quaint, picturesque chocolate box town. While in Sibiu it is not hard to imagine that you have stepped back in time and indeed stepped into a fairytale land of long ago.

In 2007 Sibiu received the recognition it deserved when it shared the European City of Culture title with Luxemburg. For those interested in the reasons for this title then there are plenty of points of interest as Sibiu has some of Romania's best museums including the Folk Museum. It also has the best preserved architecture in the country and is home to many lovely churches. There are also remains of the original Saxon Bastions which formed the town’s early fortifications.

Once all the culture has been absorbed many visitors soak up the atmosphere in one of the numerous café’s and restaurants that are dotted in and around the gorgeous town square, while some simply choose to get lost amongst the cobblestone streets and secret back-alleys of this majestic city.
