The Old Town of Brasov is straight out of the forgotten past, a real change of pace from the hussle and bussle of Bucharest. The striking gothic Black Church and the town's ancient walls highlight Brasov's colourful history and of course, there is the legendary Dracula's Castle which is unsurprisingly eerie, so those with a nervous disposition may prefer to visit in the daytime!

But it is not all about history; sip coffee in one of the many cafes, wander along the cobbled streets or if you are romantically inclined, have a candle lit dinner in one of the cosy restaurants. Situated 100 miles northwest of Bucharest, Brasov is the perfect base to explore Transylvania. It's even high enough to have its own ski resort, Poiana Brasov, a short-distance away in the virtually untouched Ardeal mountains.
